Murder Files: Man gets life in jail for brutal killing of elderly church leader

Levy Suping Selebogo, 39, has been sentenced to life in jail in the North West High Court after being convicted of the murder of an elderly woman.
Keitumetse Nkgothoe,75, was found in her home in Gopane village with an injury to the head in the early hours of Friday, 16 March 2018.
National Prosecuting Authority North West Province spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, said the woman was rushed to a nearby clinic where she was certified dead.
“Post-mortem reports revealed that she died from head injuries and broken ribs,” Nkgothoe said.
Nkgothoe said community members then took the law into their own hands and allegedly killed Lloyd Nkgothoe, 25, who they had wrongfully being accused of murdering the old woman.
“A thorough investigation and collaboration between the police and Advocate Baitse Chulu resulted in the arrest of Selebogo, whose fingerprints were discovered at the sliding-door where he gained entry,” Nkgothoe said.
“At the time of committing this crime, Selebogo was on parole after being sentenced to 18 years imprisonment in 2004 for house robbery,” Nkgothoe said.
Selebogo has now been sentenced to seven years imprisonment for house breaking and intent to rob and murder, 20 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances and life imprisonment for the murder.
The court also declared him unfit to posses a firearm in terms of Sec 103 of Firearms Control Act.
In passing out sentencing, Judge Ronald Hendricks expressed his dismay at the gruesome manner in which Selebogo had murdered Nkgothoe within the security and comfort of her home. He expressed concern regarding attacks aimed at vulnerable members of society.
Arguing for a maximum sentence, state advocate Chulu argued that Selebogo’s action was premeditated and deserved the harshest sentence stipulated in the legal framework. She further argued that Sebologo’s action had deprived students of Lehurutse College of a knowledgeable lecturer who was also a taxi operator and a prominent church and community leader.
