An intelligence-driven operation led by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in Pretoria on Tuesday afternoon, 2 June, resulted in the recovery of cocaine with a street value of R400 million from a ski boat.

COCAINE HIDDEN IN BOAT HULL, HAWKS ARREST SUSPECT

Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said a multi-disciplinary team, made up of the South African Narcotic Enforcement Bureau (SANEB), Pretoria Serious Organised Crime, Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS) of the Hawks and the Crime Intelligence Head Office, executed the operation

Mogale said that the Hawks received a tip-off, which led to a bakkie that was towing a 12-foot ski being stopped.

“Upon searching the boat the team found 800 kilograms of compressed pure cocaine with an estimated street value of R400 million,” said the spokesperson.

The 39-year-old suspect that was towing the boat on the N1 north near the R21 ‘flying saucer’ interchange was arrested and Mogale said that more arrests are imminent as the investigations into the matter continue.

The National Head of the Hawks, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya praised the operation and said the drug seizure was a step towards addressing the issue in South Africa as a whole.

“Today’s drug seizure has dealt a blow to these illegal activities,” said Lebeya. “Let us not leave any stone unturned in addressing the proliferation of illegal drugs within the country.”
