Wayde van Niekerk arrives in the USA to continue building for Tokyo Olympics

South African star athlete Wayde van Niekerk has arrived in the United States as he continues his preparation for the Tokyo Olympics later this year.

Van Niekerk took to his Twitter account to write: “Been an amazing first day in the US meeting my new team. Gradually building!!!”

Van Niekerk, who memorably won the men’s 400m title in a new world record time of 43.03 at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, split with long-time coach Tannie Ans Botha recently.

The 28-year-old felt training alongside some of the world’s leading athletes under the expert guidance of sprint mentor Lance Brauman would benefit him in his quest to defend his Olympic title.

Brauman is a world-renowned coach and counts 200m world champion, American Noah Lyles, and women’s reigning 400m Olympic champion, Shaunae Miller-Uibo, among just some of the high profile athletes he keeps a watchful eye over.

Miller-Uibo, who hails from the Bahamas, took to Instagram to welcome Van Niekerk to the team, writing: “When you get blessed with a world record holder as a training partner! Class is in session. Welcome to the group Wayde!”
