Watch: Mexico’s Andrea Meza is the new Miss Universe
Mexico’s Andrea Meza has been crowned the new Miss Universe.
Meza was crowned by South Africa’s very own Zozibini Tunzi -during the pageant’s finale in Hollywood, Florida in the early hours of Monday morning, 17 May 2021, South African time.
The glamourous event was hosted by actor and television host Mario Lopez as well as former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo.
Tunzi held the Miss Universe title for two years, as the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 had prompted organisers to postpone the competition by a year.
New Miss Universe: Who is Andrea Meza?
The new Miss Universe Andrea Meza is 27 years old and grew up in Chihuahua City. She’s the oldest of three siblings and has Chinese ancestry.
Meza is also academically-driven – she has a degree in software engineering from the Autonomous University of Chihuahua. She began her pageantry career in 2016, after she was selected to represent Chihuahua at Miss World Mexico 2016.
Meza had previously been crowned Mexicana Universal 2020 and Miss Mexico 2017, and placed as the first runner-up at Miss World 2017.
Her Miss Universe win makes her the third Mexican woman to claim the crown, following Lupita Jones and Ximena Navarrete.
Brazil’s Julia Gama was named the first runner-up while Janick Maceta Del Castillo of Peru was second runner-up.
South Africa was represented by 23 year-old Natasha Joubert – who had been the second runner-up in the country’s own pageant competition.
There were questions as to why current Miss South Africa Shudufhadzo Musida was not automatically entered into the global competition. However it was announced in December 2020 that the pageant’s top 3 contestants would each take part in different global beauty competitions.
Musida will take part in the Miss World pageant, while Thato Mosehle, the first runner-up, will represent South Africa in the Miss Supranational pageant. Joubert was the second runner-up in the competition.
