Watch: EFF student command members march in the Durban CBD

A video of Economic Freedom (EFF) fighters supporters marching through the Durban CBD on Monday night was shared on social media this week.

The EFF student protesters can be seen in the video wearing the party’s signature red berets and mostly red clothing, as they sing and march along the street in the city centre. One person is seen standing on a police van as the marchers head towards the beachfront.

It was initially unclear why the EFF members had embarked on the March.

EFF regional chairperson Vuzi Khoza said on Tuesday that the marchers were members of the EFF Student Command division. He said the protesters had taken to the street to voice their support for the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Students Representative Council (SRC) president who had been removed from his position and had been subjected to an internal disciplinary hearing.

“The students decided to demonstrate in support of him,” Khoza said.

KwaZulu-Natal SAPS spokesperson Nqobile Gwala said that students had marched in the Durban city centre but not incidents of violence had been reported.

“We can confirm there was a march last night where a group of students marched in the CBD. No incidents were reported,” Gwala said.

The DUT has been the focus of student politics in recent months after members of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) and members of the EFF Student Command clashed outside the campus. The students had allegedly been involved in a dispute about the location of campaign tables outside the university’s Steve Biko campus. Several students were injured in the violent clashes and a video of the fighting students was shared widely on social media at the time.
