The R40 was briefly brought to a standstill while recovery operations got underway. The severity of the smash became apparent when photos of the scene were uploaded online. Amongst the mangled wreckage, a deployed airbag can be seen. The car itself was left in an unrecognisable heap of twisted metal, as authorities went on to confirm:

  • The driver of VW Jetta lost control, overturned, and hit a tree.
  • All five occupants in the motor vehicle died. Early indicators say the crash was caused by reckless driving
  • Four were killed at the scene, whereas the fifth victim passed away in hospital
  • This happened on the R40 near Mohlabetsi Safari Lodge in Mopani.
  • The Limpopo Department of Transport confirmed the major details in a recently released statement:

“The driver of a VW Sedan lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road, and hit a tree. Four people were certified dead on the scene and one person was rushed to Tintswalo Hospital but succumbed to their injuries on arrival.”
