Safari lodge car crash: Five dead in freak accident near Mopani
Five people lost their lives in a tragic car crash on Sunday, which was reported to have happened near a safari lodge in Mopani, Limpopo. The group was all travelling in the same vehicle before it fatally veered off the road and into a tree.
Safari lodge car crash – what we know so far
The R40 was briefly brought to a standstill while recovery operations got underway. The severity of the smash became apparent when photos of the scene were uploaded online. Amongst the mangled wreckage, a deployed airbag can be seen. The car itself was left in an unrecognisable heap of twisted metal, as authorities went on to confirm:
- The driver of VW Jetta lost control, overturned, and hit a tree.
- All five occupants in the motor vehicle died. Early indicators say the crash was caused by reckless driving
- Four were killed at the scene, whereas the fifth victim passed away in hospital
- This happened on the R40 near Mohlabetsi Safari Lodge in Mopani.
- The Limpopo Department of Transport confirmed the major details in a recently released statement:
“The driver of a VW Sedan lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road, and hit a tree. Four people were certified dead on the scene and one person was rushed to Tintswalo Hospital but succumbed to their injuries on arrival.”
Mopani victims ‘smashed into a tree’
The safari lodge nearby is one of the most popular destinations in the Greater Kruger. In the wake of this devastating carnage, Limpopo MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has urged everyone passing through Mopani – and the rest of the province – to adhere to the rules of the road, and exercise diligence and caution while on the R40.
Major crash occurred on the R40, Limpopo. It is alleged that the driver lost control of the vehicle for an unknown reason and the vehicle overturned and crashed into a tree.
