Police confiscate R13 million worth of drugs in Western Cape

In three major drug busts police in the Western Cape has confiscated drugs to the value of R13 million.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said that the arrests in one week is believed to have “caused a dent to the illicit drug trade”.

CRYSTAL METH, HEROIN AND COCAINE SEIZED

On Tuesday, 4 May, Narcotics Organised Crime detectives in collaboration with the Namaqualand K-9 unit intercepted large quantities of heroin, crystal meth and cocaine valued at R5. 4 million in the West Coast town of Vredendal.

“The consignment was destined for Cape Town. Two men and a woman aged 32, 33 and 39 appeared in court on charges of dealing and possession of drugs,” said Potelwa.

And on Wednesday, 5 May, police from the National Intervention Unit armed with intelligence “pounced on two storage facilities” in Westlake and Noordhoek in Cape Town where they seized 30 000 mandrax tablets and 0,435 kg of crystal meth.

“A 33-year- old suspect who was arrested has since appeared in court in Wynberg. The street value of the drugs is estimated at R2. 1 million.”

DAGGA LAB WORTH R5.4M DRUGS FOUND

Potelwa added that Lockdown II forces deployed in Cape Town “to deal with serious violent crimes” found a dagga cultivating lab as well as cannabis products in Kraaifontein on Wednesday, 5 May.

Cash to the value of R56 000 and rounds of ammunition were also seized while two suspects in the house, that is also used as a karate studio, was arrested. The value of the confiscated drugs is R5. 4 million.

Western Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thembisile Patekile has lauded the efforts of all members involved in the execution of successful operations.

“The illicit drug trade is one of our focus areas as we strive to create safer Western Cape communities. Our operational plans are targeting both the runners as well as major dealers,” said Patekile.
