McCarthy’s pick for Goalkeeper of the Season award – and it’s NOT Mothwa
AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy has made a bold prediction as to who the goalkeeper of the season will be this term.
In his opinion, McCarthy feels Denis Onyango will walk away with the accolade, simply because of Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance this season.

While McCarthy’s goalkeeper at AmaZulu, Veli Mothwa, has done tremendously well so far, the all-time Bafana Bafana goalscorer feels Onyango is the favourite for the award.
“I think Onyango would be a wise choice, should Sundowns win the league,” McCarthy told reporters.

“Mothwa is a top, top goalkeeper, but you have to look at the log and if you see who’s sitting at the top.
“It is Sundowns and they are at the top because they have got a formidable squad and a very good goalkeeper, Onyango,” he said.
Mothwa joined Usuthu midway through the current season from Chippa United, McCarthy is of the view that they wouldn’t have been second on the PSL log had another goalkeeper been brought in.

“I have assessed the league and I have seen teams and goalkeepers,” McCarthy continued.
“You can play for AmaZulu and cannot have the performance that this guy [Mothwa] has had. Any other goalkeeper would have come to AmaZulu, I don’t think we would have had the season that we are having, so that tells a lot about the quality of Mothwa.
Furthermore, McCarthy doesn’t think Mothwa can be disappointed in himself if he doesn’t win the Goalkeeper of the Season award, adding that the 30-year-old doesn’t need an award to earn his respect.

“If he doesn’t win the award, I don’t think he can be too disappointed because for me he’s been the best keeper this season and the most improved player.
“That alone makes him a winner. He doesn’t need to win any award to earn my respect,” concluded McCarthy.

Mothwa has kept 10 clean sheets in 24 league matches thus far while Onyango has kept 15 clean sheets from the same number of games.
