Eskom alert: Will we get load shedding on Sunday 30 May?

Is it possible to have deja vu of having deja vu? Because this whole routine of ‘might happen, might not’ load shedding is becoming even more tiresome than the real deal. Eskom announced once more on Sunday that the lights ‘*could* be switched off later this evening – and warned that Stage 2 cuts are a possibility, too.

Will we get load shedding on Sunday 30 May?

The utility is blaming its woes on more breakdowns and a lack of generational capacity. For good measure, they’ve also stated that ‘high winter demand’ is affecting the grid. In total, more than 18 000 MW of power is missing from the system – and it is pushing Eskom to the bring this afternoon.

Let’s just hope this news doesn’t reach Steve Harvey any time soon. The Family Feud host left us all with wry smiles earlier this month, where he expressed his disappointment with Eskom and their near-constant implementation of load shedding. The flamboyant American went on to state that the rolling blackouts have even ruined his plans to buy a house in SA.

Eskom blame ‘breakdowns, winter weather’ for power constraints

“Eskom would like to appeal to the public to reduce the usage of electricity as the power system isa under severe strain. This is due to a shortage of generational capacity, which is still persisting. The supply constrains are caused by high breakdowns in generation units, and an increased winter demand.”

“While no load shedding is anticipated at this point, Eskom could be forced to implement Stage 1 or, if necessary, Stage 2 load shedding at short notice – should any further breakdowns occur. This would most likely be between 17:00 to 22:00 on Sunday 30 May. Breakdowns currently total 14 756 MW of capacity, and another 3 330 MW is offline due to maintenance.”
