Delft triple murder: Cape Town shooting leaves three dead, 13-year-old wounded

Cape Town was rocked by another mass shooting on Tuesday night, 25 May, when three people were killed and two more, including teenage girl, were seriously wounded in Delft on the Cape Flats.

The South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Anti-Gang Unit believe the shooting incident is gang-related based on their initial investigations.

DELFT SHOOTING LEAVES THREE DEAD

According to SAPS spokesperson in the Western Cape, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) detectives are investigating triple murder and attempted murder cases following a shooting that took place in Leiden, Delft – which is situated near the Cape Town International Airport – on Tuesday night.

“Reports indicate that an unknown number of suspects started firing several shots on the corner of Umvoti and Sabi Streets at 19:05 fatally wounding three persons and injuring two,” said Potelwa.

Three people died at the scene, in Delft, including a 22-year-old woman and two men aged 39 and 28, respectively.

Two other people sustained serious gunshot wounds – a 13-year-old girl and 33-year-old woman were transported to hospital for treatment.

“The incident is believed to be gang related. Anyone with information that could assist the police investigation is urged to contact police on 08600-10111,” said Potelwa.

EASTERN CAPE POLICE ARREST TRIPLE MURDER SUSPECTS

The last few weeks in South Africa have been marred by mass shooting incidents. Following the Delft shooting at least 19 people have been shot and killed since Saturday, 15 May.

In the Western Cape, 13 people were killed in Khayelitsha in separate shooting incidents – police believe the murders may be related to the extortion rackets that are plaguing the area. On Monday, 11 suspects were arrested at a hotel in Sea Point for their alleged connection to the shooting.

In an unrelated matter, police in the Eastern Cape arrested three of the six suspects believed to be involved in a brutal triple murder at a Bityi homestead on Monday, 17 May. According to police, six balaclava clad men attacked the homestead and killed three people between the age of 35 and 52. Three suspects are still at a large.
