LOOK: Cars in Cape Town crushed by falling freight containers
If you reckon you’ve picked a bad parking space before, spare a thought for these motorists in Cape Town: Several cars have been crushed by freight containers on Thursday, after freak winds at Paarden Eiland blew the storage units over.
‘Remember where we parked’: Freak weather conditions cause chaos
The incident took place at Paarden Eiland – one of the biggest industrial estates in the Mother City. Despite a relatively pleasant forecast being given out for Thursday, strong winds are persisting across the south-west. Earlier this morning, those gusts came through with a vengeance, tipping multiple containers from their precarious perches.
The rectangular boxes came crashing down to the ground, annihilating the vehicles underneath. Thankfully, no occupants were inside these cars at the time, and not a single injury has been reported. Authorities were called to the scene immediately, and this bizarre incident has also been shared to a gobsmacked crowd on social media:

Cape Town weather forecast for Thursday 15 April – the winds are kicking up…
The recovery mission promises to be logistically challenging, however – and we certainly don’t fancy being one of the drivers who have to call their insurance company later: We doubt this particular event crops up on the regular.
Gales of 40km/h to 45km/h have been reported in Paarden Eiland so far on Thursday. Although this isn’t much to write home about when the ‘Cape Doctor’ steams into town, it has still proved significant enough to cause some serious damage. Indeed, parking in this part of Cape Town should probably be listed as an extreme sport going forward…
