Here’s why you need to visit Zimbabwe’s mighty Victoria Falls soon
The Victoria Falls — located on the Zambezi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe — is currently flowing at its peak thanks to a higher-than-average rainfall since November last year.
Getaway Magazine recently reported that the current amount of water flowing into the Zambezi River from the catchment area in Angola, could result in Vic Falls’ highest water volumes in history with the “big waters” usually arriving between March and May.
PEAK VIEWING SEASON APPROACHES
Known locally as the Mosi Oa Tunya (“The Smoke that Thunders”), the Victoria Falls is one of the natural wonders of the world. It is the largest sheet of falling water on the planet. The enormous waterfall spans 1688m wide (the entire width of the Zambezi River) and plunges 108m over a basalt cliff to continue its path along the Zambezi River below.
Victoria Falls has both a high-and a low-water season. The high-water season is from May to August when the waterfall flows at its best. After the heavy rains recorded in January and February this year, this magnificent waterfall is flowing at its peak – offering visitors the most amazing views and experiences.
COMAIR RAMPS UP ITS REGIONAL ROUTES
British Airways (operated locally by Comair) has announced plans to resume its regional route network after an extended period of operating only domestic flights. The airline chose to focus on its internal route network when resuming flights in December last year.
Comair has announced the resumption of flights to two destinations in Zimbabwe, as the airline begins to restart operations outside South Africa’s borders.
RESTART OF ZIM FLIGHTS
After announcing the restart of its flights between Johannesburg and Harare from 28 March, the airline has said it will resume daily flights from Johannesburg to the Victoria Falls in June.
A skeleton service will be operated between Johannesburg and Victoria Falls from the middle of May with flight bookings already available on the britishairways.com website. The announcement comes just in time for travellers to get up to the Victoria Falls for the peak viewing season.
“The reopening of the route is also just in time for customers to experience Victoria Falls during its peak tourist season when the entire length of the Victoria Falls is a thundering wall of falling water from May through to August,” British Airways’ Desmond O’Connor told Tourism Update.
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT VICTORIA FALLS
Victoria Falls offers a plethora of activities, ranging from high adrenalin adventure activities to game viewing and luxurious high teas on Stanley’s terrace at the five-star Victoria Falls Hotel.
British Airways will also be offering holiday packages to the Victoria Falls.
“These will be filled with limitless adventure activities, some of which include swimming in the famous Devil’s Pool, white-water rafting, kayaking, bungee jumping, zip-lining, plus amazing safari experiences in the nearby national parks, as well as sunset boat cruises on the upper stretches of the Zambezi River,” O’Connor said.
