Gavin Hunt feels Kaizer Chiefs are suffering from mental fatigue

Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt has reacted to his side’s 0-0 draw against Petro de Luanda in the CAF Champions League.

Amakhosi failed to complete a double over the Angolans and enhance their chances of advancing to the quarter-finals.

However, Hunt didn’t want to fault his players, saying they gave it their all to earn a point away from home.

Hunt added that his players are slowly suffering from mental fatigue from the travelling as well as the congested fixture schedule.

“I think we’ve been going now for a good few months and you can see we’ve got to get through the weekend, and then we need a break, that’s for sure,” Hunt told the media.

“You can see there’s a little bit of mental fatigue because of all the playing, up and down and [travelling] around with our squad size.

“But they gave me their all. The most important thing is that they’re fighting, working, and doing their best, and that’s the most important thing, you can’t fault the players,” added Hunt.

Furthermore, Hunt said they were expecting Petro to be more competitive and tougher at home, adding that Chiefs also had to change their approach to the game.

“Look, we knew they were going to be much tougher at home but we also played in a way where we were a little bit more counter-attacking.

“So, we sat back a little bit, dropped the team by 10-15 meters, and it worked,” revealed Hunt.

Hunt feels Chiefs were let down by their final pass around the box, and he blamed that to the quality of his squad.

And while he is disappointed with the draw against Petro, Hunt said it was a fair result.

“I just thought our final ball and final pass around the box let us down, and that’s just due to quality. So, we have to be better there. The draw, I think is a fair result,” continued Hunt.

“Obviously disappointed, but you’ve also got to take a lot of things into consideration. I think the team did well,” he added.
