Gauteng weather warning: Localised flooding predicted on Wednesday

Gauteng is set for some severe weather over the next few days according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), who said on Wednesday 24 March that localised flooding and poor driving conditions may result from heavy rainfall over the next 24-hours.

The SAWS has issued a yellow level 2 weather warning for the province, and also predict that the adverse weather will impact north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape, north-western parts of the Free State and western and southern parts of the North West.

Gauteng braced for heavy rain

In a statement released on Wednesday, SAWS said that the weather warning relates to high possibilities of disruptions to major roadways in Gauteng, especially Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom and Kroonstad.

“Difficult driving conditions due to reduced visibility and slippery roads can contribute to an increased travel time and minor accidents, especially the afternoon rush hour as people will be travelling from work,” said SAWS.

Rainfall expected around the country

SAWS said that the heavy rains would also impact other parts of the province too:

“Yellow level 2 Warning for Disruptive Rain is expected over the north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape, the north-western parts of the Free State, western and southern parts of the North West Province and the southern and central parts of Gauteng which may result in localised flooding of susceptible roads low lying areas and bridges and difficult driving conditions,” they said.

“Localised flooding of susceptible roads, informal settlements and low-lying bridges can be expected. The rainy conditions may also result in difficult driving conditions, increased travel times and minor vehicle accidents,” SAWS said.
