Durbanville: Cops searching for female hijacking suspect in ‘rare case’

Police in the Western Cape town of Durbanville are looking for a hijacking suspect that doesn’t fit the typical profile. Vehicle theft is a crime committed overwhelmingly by men, but officials have been alerted to the devious tactics employed by a woman who drove away with an elderly victim’s car this week.

Female hijacking suspect sought in Durbanville

The bizarre incident played out on Wednesday. The man, in his eighties, gave a lift to a woman heading from Bellvile going back towards Durbanville. However, his act of kindness sadly proved to be his ultimate undoing.

The suspect pretended she had lost her phone at some point during the car ride. When the motorist pulled up to look for the device, the female carjacker executed her plan: She held a gun to the target’s head, and forced him out of the vehicle.

The silver Honda Jazz hasn’t been seen since, and the woman has evaded capture for the last 48 hours. It’s understood the car is worth about R80 000. However, one cannot put a price on a human life, and the suspect’s decision to comply with his attacker kept him out of mortal danger.

“On Wednesday at 12:45, An 80-year-old white male of Durbanville was hijacked on the corners of Old Oak and Mountain View Drive. According to the complainant, he gave an unknown female a lift from the Willow Bridge Mall.”

“She asked the victim to take her into Durbanville, informing him that she has dropped her phone in the car. While the motorists searched for it, the woman held a gun to his head and forced him out of the car. She then drove away with the silver Honda Jazz. The vehicle is valued at around R80 000.”
