Old-fashioned Soetkoekies – Cookies, like gran used to make

There’s an Afrikaans phrase: ‘Verkoop soos soetkoekies’ which translates to ‘sells like sweetcakes’. And that is why you need to try this Old-fashioned Soetkoekies recipe. The recipe makes over one hundred cookies which you can hand out to your friends and family as gifts, sell at your next cake sale or devour yourself at home. It will taste like pure nostalgia with every bite.

There isn’t an easier cookie recipe that delivers so much goodness. It doesn’t even take that long to prepare. Old-fashioned Soetkoekies Recipe

    Ingredients

    • 250 g butter, room temperature

    • 600 g sugar

    • 5 large eggs

    • 825 g cake flour, measured unsifted)

    • 30 ml baking powder

    • 10 ml ground nutmeg

    • 2 ml salt

    • To paint the biscuits:
    • 1 egg, beaten

    • 25 ml milk

    • extra sugar for decorating

    Method

    • Cream butter, sugar and the five eggs together. Sift together cake flour, baking powder, nutmeg and salt. Mix sifted ingredients with butter mixture until a fairly soft dough is formed.
    • Cover and allow to rest for half an hour. 
    • Preheat oven to 200°C. Lightly grease baking trays or use a non-stick spray. 
    • Roll out dough thinly on a surface dusted with flour. Cut out circles, 4 to 5cm in diameter, using a cookie cutter. 
    • Place dough circles slightly apart on baking sheets. Mix beaten egg and milk, and lightly paint over biscuits. Sprinkle a little sugar in the centre of each biscuit for decoration. 
    • Bake biscuits for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven, allow to cool slightly and place on a wire rack to cool completely. 
    • Store in an airtight container.
