OFF! | KAIZER CHIEFS CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WON’T GO AHEAD

According to reports in Ghana, the Black Stars have raised fears over their scheduled trip to South Africa in their penultimate Group C AFCON 2022 qualifier on 21 March.

The Ghana FA are said to have written a letter to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to request that the match be moved from South Africa over fears of the more infectious variant Covid-19 strain that was discovered.

This decision follows hot on the heels of a similar request by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation who have refused Kaizer Chiefs entry into the country for a CAF Champions League fixture against Wydad Athletic which was scheduled for Saturday, 13 February.

“The Ghana Football Association has written to CAF requesting for a change in venue for the upcoming African Cup of Nations qualifications fixture against South Africa,” reported ghanasoccernet.com.

“Due to the spike in the COVID-19 cases in South Africa, the Ghana FA is requesting the match to be played in a different country.

“The Ghana FA sent the letter to Africa’s football governing body last week and is awaiting a response.”

Bafana Bafana and Ghana are currently tied on nine points in Group C with two rounds of qualifiers remaining. The match represents a ‘make or break’ situation for both sides, especially South Africa, as defeat could spell the end of the qualifying hopes for the loser.

Sudan are on the third position with six points while Sao Tomé and Principe languish at the bottom of the standings with zero points to date.
