COVID-19 update: More than 32 000 vaccines administered as SA death toll nears 50 000

The latest COVID-19 figures have been released. According to the Health Ministry, 998 new cases were identified in South Africa. As of today, the death toll stands at 49 413 with recoveries at 1 419 459.

Breakdown of new confirmed COVID-19 cases

As per Health Minister Zweli Mkhize’s report, 998 confirmed cases were identified during the past 24 hours (792 on 22 February 2020). Unfortunately, we also lost 263 patients to COVID-19-related illnesses.

As per the report: 51 patients from the Eastern Cape passed away, 27 from the Free State, 39 from Gauteng, 60 from KwaZulu-Natal, 55 from Limpopo, 3 from Northern Cape, and 28 from Western Cape.

At the time of publishing, the Health Ministry recorded 8 932 950 cumulative COVID-19 tests, of which 25 093 were done during the past 24 hours: 9 001 at public facilities and 16 092 at private facilities.

AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine update

USA and Canada: President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will meet by video Tuesday to calm the waters after the turbulent Donald Trump era, renewing an emphasis on the neighbours’ far-reaching alliance.

Netherlands will extend its controversial coronavirus curfew by a further two weeks despite the violent protests the measure sparked earlier this year, and could keep it in place longer if necessary, the prime minister said Tuesday.

Czech Republic: Former Czech president Vaclav Klaus, who has recently made a splash by publicly defying government restrictions to stem the COVID-19 spread, has caught the disease, his spokesman said Tuesday.

Ireland third COVID-19  lockdown will be extended by a month, Prime Minister Micheal Martin said Tuesday, blaming a virus variant first identified in the UK for the decision.

Poland: A growing number of Poles are opposed to getting a COVID vaccine,  according to an opinion poll published on Tuesday, despite government warnings about a rising “third wave” of infections.

Global statistics

At the time of publishing, COVID-19 is affecting 219 countries and territories. The global caseload stands at 112,512,735, with the death toll at 2,491,945 and recoveries at 88,066,589.

The US is the worst-affected with 513,985 deaths from 28,867,562 cases. After the US, the hardest-hit countries are India with 156,598 deaths from 11,029,326 cases, and Brazil with 247,276 deaths from 10,197,531.

Russia has 84,047 deaths from 4,189,153 cases while the UK recorded 121,305 deaths from 4,134,639 cases. South Africa is currently 16th on the list, preceded by Iran, Poland, Mexico, Argentina, Columbia, Germany, Turkey, Italy, Spain, and France.
