The South African was one of five players who were fined by police for breaching Covid rules and they’ve all been removed from the first team squad for now.

Bongani Zungu, who is on loan from French club Amiens, has struggled to make an impact during his loan spell and Gerrard was left hugely frustrated by what happened last weekend as it leaves him short on numbers.

The other offenders were Nathan Patterson and Calvin Bassey, as well as youth duo Dapo Mebude – on loan at Queen of the South – and Brian Kinnear.

According to the GlasgowLive website, When asked if Bongani Zungu’s chances of a permanent deal had all but disappeared after the incident, Gerrard responded: “I think that would be fair to say, yes.”

He added: “We’ll move forward with the players who have remained professional and want to be part of a successful team.

“We spoke as a group and I explained the situation to them.

“We’re at such an important time of the season with the fixtures coming up that we can’t be worrying about it or letting our focus slide.”

Bongani Zungu has played 29 matches in all competitions for Bafana Bafana.
