COVID-19 in SA: Recovery rate at 82%, 12 267 new cases

There is good news in South Africa’s fight against COVID-19 as the recovery rate is at 82.1%, as of Sunday evening, 17 January 2021. This comes after the number of people who have managed to recover from COVID-19 breached the 1 million mark.

“As of today, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is 1 337 926, the total number of deaths is 37 105 and the total number of recoveries is 1 098 441,” Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said in his daily updates.

COVID-19: Death toll surpasses 37 000

The country’s COVID-19 death toll has also increased after 254 more people succumbed to the virus, which brings the number of people who succumbed to the virus to 37 105.

Of the latest deaths, 59 were in Gauteng, 40 in KwaZulu-Natal, 22 in the Eastern Cape, 72 in the Western Cape, 13 in the Free State, 26 recorded in the North West, Mpumalanga has recorded 16 deaths and six in the Northern Cape.

The cumulative total of tests conducted to date is 7 613 470 with 54 696 new tests conducted since the last report.
