Why SA drivers may hear *a lot* of hooting at midday – for the next two weeks
If you’re out on the roads in the next two weeks, and get startled by a load of hooting, don’t take it personally. Although this time of year is practically synonymous with badly-behaved drivers, these upcoming horn blasts do have a purpose.
Why are South Africans hooting at midday?
Thanks to the sharp wits of Fikile Mbalula, the transport ministry has come up with a new way to promote responsible driving… by asking motorists to sound their car horns at midday every day for the next two weeks. The move has been brainstormed by the department and road safety agency Arrive Alive.

Mbalula’s ‘got the horn’ for road safety
The initiative forms part of a wider road safety programme organised by Mbalula and his colleagues. The festive season is notorious for terrible accidents and the increased loss of life, due to higher volumes of traffic on the roads and the tendency for some motorists to ‘let their guard down’. The minister will patrol key highways for the remainder of Thursday.
“Minister Fikile Mbalula calls on all South Africans to join in solidarity with the campaign of ‘Hooting For Life’ at 12:00 noon on Thurs 17 December, when the initiative is set to begin, and continue to do so every day at midday until 31 December.”
“By hooting at midday, South Africans will show their support for road safety and encourage responsible driving. On Thursday, the minister will also engage drivers at different stops on the route from Soweto to Tshwane.”
