What time will Ramaphosa address the nation on Monday 14 December?
We’ve got a family meeting in the diary for Monday. After it initially seemed like Cyril Ramaphosa would sit us all down on Sunday, he kindly gave us the weekend off – but the president’s address to the nation now looms over us as we head towards a very solemn update this evening. And yes, we’re aware you want to know what time the speech starts…
Lockdown update: What time will Cyril Ramaphosa address the nation on Monday?
Right now, that’s up in the air. It’s likely that we will hear from Cyril at 20:00, however. This has been his preferred time to update South Africa on our lockdown developments, and it was believed that Ramaphosa was delivering the address at this hour on Sunday before his speech was pushed back. We do not have an official time as we begin our day on Monday.
That, of course, is subject to change. Once we have an update from the presidency, we will update this article accordingly. In a statement released over the weekend, it was revealed that President Ramaphosa had met with the NCCC, PCC, and members of his own Cabinet – a surefire sign that our lockdown restrictions are facing a major shake-up.
What to expect from tonight’s ‘family meeting’
We have been given a few clues about what Cyril wants to tell us – and it’s not going to be a friendly chat.
- The president is likely to bring in tougher lockdown restrictions – like the ones imposed in NMB – for more regions.
- Beaches are set to be closed in key areas of South Africa, in an attempt to limit the spread of COVID-19.
- Alcohol restrictions will be brought in for affected ‘hot-spot’ locations.
- You can also expect Ramaphosa to issue a firm warning against mass gatherings over the festive season.
Ramaphosa set to confirm ‘major lockdown changes’
As we wait to hear what time ‘kick-off’ will be, Ramaphosa’s office posted this update on Sunday evening:
“President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation on Monday evening, 14 December 2020, on developments in relation to the country’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. The address will be broadcast and streamed on a range of platforms that are accessible to South Africans and international audiences.”
“The address follows meetings today, Sunday 13 December 2020, of the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC), the President’s Coordinating Council (PCC), and a special sitting of Cabinet. The exact time of the President’s address will be announced on Monday, 14 December.”
