‘Business in the front, party in the back’: Rihanna rocks 2020 mullet trend
Real name, Robyn Rihanna Fenty popularly known as Rihanna, was spotted a few days ago rocking a curly mullet when she returned home to Barbados for the holidays.
The singer, actress and businesswoman can be seen in an Instagram post sporting her mullet in a cherry bikini accessorized with two — rather strategically placed — tiny Chanel bags.
It’s not the first time that Rihanna has chopped her hair in a mullet. Way back in 2013, the star already stepped out with a retro mullet, complete with a Mohawk tail and she also wore a mullet at her Savage x Fenty Show Vol 2 in October 2020.
MILEY CYRUS AND ZAC EFRON AND THE MULLET
The mullet hairstyle is typically short in the front and long in the back. The hairstyle is commonly referred to as “business in the front, party in the back” and was famously worn by I Want My Mullet Back singer Billy Ray Cyrus and Joe Exotic of Netflix’s controversial Tiger King documentary.
Superstar Miley Cyrus followed in the footsteps of her dad, Billy Ray, by starting off 2020 with a mullet.
And Zac Efron, on the other hand, is ending his year off with a mullet.
SAVAGE X FENTY RUNWAY ROCKING MULLETS
In October, the Work hitmaker put together The Savage x Fenty Show Vol 2. Rihanna outdid herself, calling on New Zealand choreographer Parris Goebel for the choreography of the show and musical acts by Rosalia, Bad Bunny and Roddy Rich, as well as celebrity appearances from Normani, Lizzo and Paris Hilton.
As mentioned above, Rihanna opened the show showing off her mullet, joined by models Cara Delavigne and Raisa Flowers with their funky mullets.
THE MULLET’S COMEBACK ON TIKTOK
The popular 1980’s mullet hairstyle has recently also made its comeback on TikTok.
TikTok user’s have been creating videos of themselves cutting their hair into the mullet hairstyle and also filming their friends and family’s unexpected reactions.
There has been 1.3 billion people who have watched videos under #mullet on the platform. As people started to do more DIY hair and beauty styling at home, the mullet became one of the must-try hairstyles of 2020.
GENDER-NEUTRAL TREND
When the mullet gained popularity in the 1980s it was a predominantly male hairstyle as it depicted masculinity at the time and femininity was represented differently. However, in 2020 it has become a gender neutral hairstyle as women have also become a large part of the trend without having to let go of their femininity.
THE CHILLET
Not everyone is brave enough to embrace a full mullet in 2020 and a variation has been created called the chillet. The chillet was created by hairstylist Riawna Capri last year which she describes as a “chill mullet”.
The hairstyle did not fully catch on, but it did influence a few high fashion looks.
