Homemade Pork Chow Mein – One pan but all the flavour

Is Chow Mein already one of your favourite Chinese take-out dishes? This Pork Chow Mein one-pan dinner is so satisfying with pork/beef of chicken, vegetables, and the best homemade Chow Mein sauce. Also, it is way healthier than ordering in take-out.

Chow Mein (Mandarin: “ch’ao mien”) translates to “stir-fried noodles”. This dish originated in Northern China but is very well known as an American take-out staple. There, it has been altered to appeal to Western taste, but the basics are still there. Vegetables, boiled noodles and a choice of meat or tofu protein is your thing. With a variety of vegetables, this Homemade Chow Mein recipe is healthy and can be adjusted for any food preference. The vegetables, packed with nutrients combined pork for protein, turns this Pork Chow Mein into a great one-dish meal.

Dinner will be ready in no-time and your family or guests won’t be hungry for very long. This Pork Chow Mein recipe is also perfect for professionals who don’t always have time to cook big, complicated meals. Ready in just over 30 minutes.

    Ingredients

    • 500 g pork, cubed

    • 200 g Portobello mushrooms

    • 1 cup sugar snap peas (green or purple)

    • Noodles: If you like you can use any pasta (Chow Mein noodles are made with wheat and egg. They are very similar to Italian pasta noodles and have a wonderful bite to them)

    • ½ cup chow mein sauce

    • olive oil

    • CHOW MEIN SAUCE
    • 5 tbsp oyster sauce

    • 3 tbsp olive oil

    • 2 tbsp soy sauce

    • ½ cup chicken broth

    • 1 tsp corn starch (Maizena)

    • 1 chilli, chopped (seeded if you don’t want too much heat)

    Method

    • Cut the pork in cubes, leaving a little fat on.
    • Slice the mushrooms.
    • Slice the sugar snaps in halve.
    • Make the chow main sauce, combine all the ingredients, if you like more of a bite, add Jalapeno sauce to taste.
    • Bring water to the boil for the noodles, add in the noodles as much as you think you will need.
    • Heat a large wok or pan. Add a bit of oil to the wok and sauté the mushrooms. Place in bowl.
    • Saute the sugar snaps and set aside with mushrooms
    • Now you add the pork to the wok and stir fry, add more oil if needed. Saute until pork is not pink anymore and cooked.
    • Add the mushrooms and sugar snaps to the pork while stirring well. Pour in the chow mein sauce,
    • Cook for about 2 minutes, distributing all that saucy goodness around evenly.
    • Add in the cooked noodles directly in, mix, garnish and serve hot.

    Notes

    • Garnish with coriander
