PSL 2019/2020: Golden Glove goes to Williams for second season in a row
Supersport United stopper Ronwen Williams has won the PSL 2019/2020 season’s golden glove keeping the most clean sheets for the second season in a row.
PSL 2019/2020: Most clean sheets
Williams played every single league game for SuperSport this season and kept 13 clean sheets throughout the campaign, with his efforts central to the club challenging for top honours.
The Bafana Bafana keeper was the only stopper to play every match for his team this term.
Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands ended just one clean sheet behind Williams, blanking opponents on 12 occasions in his 27 PSL starts in the 2019/2020 season.
The Champions keep it tight at the back
As a team, Mamelodi Sundowns kept the most clean sheets this term en route to a record-breaking fifth title for coach Pitso Mosimane. Between Denin Onyango (8) and Kennedy Mweene (7), the Brazilians kept their opponents scoreless in 15 out of 30 matches this season.
Sundowns have reinforced their goalkeeping ranks for next season as well signing Bidvest Wits stopper Ricardo Goss. Goss was sixth on the Golden Glove stakes keeping six clean sheets in 19 PSL appearances.
In the bottom half of the table, Chippa United will be desperate to keep hold of Veli Mothwa who went unbeaten in 11 of the 19 matches he played for the Eastern Cape outfit. The 29-year-old deserves a medal for his efforts in keeping the strugglers out of the relegation zone.
Another man who will no doubt draw interest in the coming closed season is Maritzburg United’s Richard Ofori whose rich vein of form stretches back to the Team of Choice’s desperate efforts to survive in 2018/19 but this term he helped his team to a top eight finish with 11 clean sheets.
Kaizer Chiefs will be left to rue the absence of Daniel Akpeyi in the closing match of the season. The Nigerian suffered an injury in the run-in and missed the last two matches. He ended with ten clean sheets in 25 matches.
