R350 grant latest: SASSA says some monthly payments ‘could be split’

Another day, another baffling update with regards to the R350 grant payments. SASSA’s Relief of Distress Fund has been littered with technical and administrative issues since its introduction in May, leaving a high proportion of the six million eligible applicants out of pocket and in a tough financial spot.

R350 grant payments ‘may be split’ for those backlogged

A number of potential recipients are still waiting on grant payments from the previous month. Initially promising to ‘double-up’ on monthly fees for those who had to wait longer than others, SASSA have since explained that the R350 grant payments may be ‘split over a number of days or weeks’.

Those expecting to receive two payments at once in the month of July, due to the outstanding backlog of payments, will most likely have to wait between paydays, rather than receive two lots of R350 in one go. For all applicants, it’s worth noting that there is no specific date of payment – it lands when it lands, unfortunately.

SASSA grant payments in June to cause hold-ups for July

Tripping over their own feet in the process, SASSA has outlined how payments will work for those yet to receive their money from June. It’s understood that all applicants are reviewed on a monthly basis, to see if they can still qualify for the grant. Those who were not paid last month will not receive their scheduled July funds until the payment from June is made – creating a cashflow problem for desperate recipients:

“If an applicant qualifies in that month of the application, they will be paid for that month and for the current month – if they still meet the application criteria. The payment may not necessarily be a ‘double payment’ or a ‘lump sum’, nor is it guaranteed to be paid on the same day. It can be split over days or weeks.”

“Every month SASSA considers every applicant again to see whether their circumstances might have changed.  Should an individual qualify again, they will receive their previous month’s payment as well. For example; everyone not paid in June 2020, must be completed before the July 2020 payments can resume.”
