‘Prepare for load shedding on Thursday’, Eskom tells South Africa

Eskom’s desire to pick the worst possible moment to reintroduce load shedding is, despite being typical, a huge disappointment for South Africans. A raging cold front sweeps into the country on Thursday, and the power giants look set to cut the electricity at some point in the evening.

What time will load shedding take place on Thursday 9 July?

In a recently-issued statement, Eskom explains that their severely-constrained grid will be under tremendous pressure later on in the day. Peak demand begins at 17:00 and ends around 21:00. Five significant power units have been taken offline this week, dramatically impacting the firm’s ability to produce electricity for all.

There has been plenty of ‘flirting’ with the reintroduction of load shedding throughout the winter. Eskom introduced ‘load reduction’ schedules to Gauteng in June, and had several close calls this month. Multiple warnings from the company have been directed at the public in the last week or so, asking citizens to cut down on electricity consumption.

Eskom has issued the same plea on Thursday, but it looks as if our efforts will be in vain. The statement reveals that the possibility of load shedding is ‘high’, and any other significant breakdowns could severely limit their capacity to keep the lights on. Sadly, this problem may persist through the weekend:

“The possibility of load shedding during the peak demand hours is high. We urge the public to reduce electricity usage as the power generation system is severely constrained. “

“Any additional breakdowns will compromise Eskom’s ability to supply the country through the peak demand period of 17:00 – 21:00. This situation may persist through the weekend. We request the public’s cooperation in managing demand, to help us avoid a further schedule of load shedding.”
