COVID-19 latest on 4 July: Cases in SA climb by over 10 000

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa climbed by a record 10 853 in the past 24 hours, the Health Ministry announced on Saturday night. The country also recorded a further 74 fatalities from complications associated with the novel virus during the same period.

This brings the the number of total infections to 187 977 from 1 792 078 tests conducted since the beginning of the year.

The number of recoveries now stands at 91 227 meaning there is 96 750 active cases.

Out of the latter, Gauteng leads with 43 438 active cases out of its 59 373 total infections, which makes the province the country’s COVID-19 epicentre.

In terms of the new deaths, 31 were recorded in the Eastern Cape, with the Western Cape accounting for the rest to bring its total to 2 026.
