Babes Wodumo is back and this time our gqom queen is here to stay

Gqom queen Babes Wodumo is back with her sophomore album, titled Idando Kazi.

Babes Wodumo drops album

On Friday morning, fans woke up to the news that the KwaZulu-Natal native had released the album.

She features long-term partner Mampintsha on most of the tracks, as well as fellow Durban artists TNS, Dladla Mshunqisi, Tipcee and Madanon.

This album follows her debut project Gqom Queen, Vol 1 which features the hit tracks Wololo, Umgan Wami and Mercedes. Twitter users were excited with the news of Wodumo’s new release and had this to say:

Durban rocked this weekend

Alongside her new album, she was the centre of attention at the Virtual Fact Durban Rocks party on Saturday 25 July, hosted on Channel O.

The gqom star gave the audience a stellar high-energy performance, which is nothing less that we expect from the Babes Wodumo we appreciate and love on stage.

The Metro FM Music award nominee also released the video for her single from the album titled Corona. This features Mampintsha and Worst Behaviour in May, along with her own amazing dance moves, shot by Wizphix Media.

The Gqom Genre

The gqom singer rose to stardom with her hit single Wololo off her first album and the genre has grown exponentially largely due to it.

Since then, Babes Wodumo has been nominated for several awards, including some South African Music Awards (Samas), the MTV Africa Music Awards, the prestigious BET Awards and the South African Gqom Awards in 2019.

Hailing from the KwaZulu-Natal town of Lamontville, the gqom genre is synonymous with names like Babes Wodumo, Distruction Boyz and TLC Fam.

These artists all are breaking boundaries with the genre alongside DJ Lag, Rude Boyz and the multi-genre phenomenon DJ Maphorisa.

The genre is associated with the dance move the gwara gwara which DJ Bongz created.

The gwara gwara hit the news when international star Rihanna performed it in her music video Wild Thoughts with DJ Khaled and Byrson Tiller. Then there was Childish Gambino who made the moves as well in his music video for This is America.
