EFF makes another contribution to the Solidarity Fund

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) announced on Friday that the party has made another contribution to the Solidarity Fund.

This is the second pledge made by the red berets to South Africa’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

EFF doubles its Solidarity Fund contribution

The party had previously donated R6 million to the fund, and have now doubled that figure with their latest contribution.

In a statement issued out on Friday, the EFF reiterated its call for organisations who have committed funds to the cause to produce proof of payment.

“We maintain our belief that anyone who has failed to produce these proofs of payment has effectively lied or misled society for public relations purposes. People and companies must provide evidence of their pledges as the EFF is doing.”

The party also called for President Cyril Ramaphosa to provide proof of donations he has promised to both the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Solidarity Fund.

“We cannot trust Cyril Ramaphosa because he has a history of dishonesty and being dishonourable when we demand the proof of these contributions.”

Pledges to the fund approaching R3bn

The EFF is among many organisations and businesses who have contributed to the Solidarity Fund since its launch in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.

Other well-known entities to have pledged funds to the cause include the Oppenheimer family and Ithuba National Lottery.

As of Wednesday 3 June, the fund had received a total of R2.53bn in donations.

The EFF has urged government to provide transparency in terms of how these funds are used in order to discourage corruption.

“We must remember that it is through our contributions, human solidarity and cooperation that we can ultimately defeat the COVID-19 pandemic. We encourage all citizens to practice social distancing and adhere to lockdown regulations in order to protect human life.”
