Umgeni horror crash: ‘Vehicle could have been shot at’
A horrific crash on the Umgeni Road flyover in Durban, on Tuesday 12 May, has killed seven people and left another injured in a critical condition.
It is alleged that the driver somehow lost control of the vehicle around 06:00. However, a bullet was also found inside the car which has led to allegations of foul play.
Rescue paramedics were on the scene at the Umgeni flyover. Jaws of life equipment had to be used to cut the patients free.
“Once freed, unfortunately, seven of them had been declared deceased on the scene and one person has been to a nearby hospital for the urgent care that they require,” said Rescue Care Paramedic spokesperson Garith Jamieson.

In an interview with eNCA, Captain Raj Rooplal from the South African Police Service (Saps) said the car crashed onto a barrier, bounced off it and then crashed onto the barrier on the opposite side of the road.
Rooplal said it looked as though the driver lost control.
Then Rooplal dropped an unexpected bit of news; he said the car, travelling on the Umgeni flyover, could have possibly been shot at.
“The other challenge we’re experiencing now is that we’ve established that the vehicle may have been shot at and this is now taking a different investigation into this crash,” he said.
“We’ve established a bullet entering into the rear right of the vehicle, we found bullet shrapnel in the vehicle, we’re just waiting for it to be sent to forensics so that they can continue with the investigation,” added Rooplal.
