The best ever homemade pizza sauce recipe

You love your pizza, you add the toppings you prefer, wait for the dough to proof and eventually get to sit, enjoy the cheesy slice of pizza that you personally created. So why wouldn’t you want the best, clean and flavour packed sauce to line to pizza? Nothing compares to this delicious sauce.

It is a rich, thick sauce that is super satisfying to spread. But here is the best part, this pizza sauce (yes, we know it’s called pizza sauce) can be used in so many other dishes as well, such as Chicken Parmesan, a bread stick dipping sauce, and pasta’s.

I promise you will be making huge batches and using it in nearly every dish!
Now the scary part – the number of ingredients – 15 in total, BUT I promise they are very basic ingredients and you most likely have them in your grocery cupboard already.

The magic ingredients for your pizza sauce

  • Butter and Olive oil: We will be cooking the onions and all those delectable flavors from the spices in it and the butter adds depth and besides, what meal isn’t made better with a little butter.
  • Onions: These bad boys wont have time to make you cry, because we are grating them
  • Garlic: Flavors we love and what says Italian cuisine more than garlic?
  • Spices: Get ready it’s a list of Italian essentials, onion powder, oregano, basil, Italian herbs, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper
  • Italian tomatoes and tomato paste: Keep the can and use it to add a splash of water to it to get every drop of that tomato goodness in our sauce.
  • Sugar: We all know we need to take the tartnesss of out these tomatoes
  • Parmesan cheese: This beautiful ingredient is going to be used to thicken our delicious spreadable sauce

Be patient when making the sauce

The most important thing to remember with this recipe is time = flavour development.

Patience is key here as we will be simmering our sauce down for a whole 30 minutes. I promise the result will be a thick beautiful, richly flattered pizza sauce with deep red colors and aroma’s to die for.

Tips for making a great pizza at home

Pizzeria’s use incredibly hot ovens giving their pizza crusts that crunch we have all come to love. So a warning cooking your pizza at a too low temperature or overloading it with toppings could possibly result in soggy pizzas, which may taste great but wont be as close to that authentic pizza texture we are after.

I recommend a preheated oven – for at least 45 minutes as high as your oven will go. Do this whilst you make your own pizza bases and prep the toppings. If you are using a pizza stone, put it in the oven before turning the heat on so it has time to heat up as well.
