Live stream: What time will Angie Motshekga address the media on Sunday 31 May?

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is set to address the nation on Sunday with a media conference held later this evening. It’s believed the senior politician will update South Africa on her department’s ‘back to school’ plans via a televised broadcast and a live stream – but what time will it all kick-off?

What time will Angie Motshekga give an address?

It’s been confirmed by government sources that the briefing will get underway at 18:00. Barring any unexpected delays or postponements, Motshekga is expected to reveal if children can return to school on Monday or not, as a fresh wave of doubt has been cast over her proposals.

Critics say it’s too early to send any child back to school, whereas leading unions and governing bodies fear that thousands of institutions still don’t have the necessary protective equipment and health protocols in place. It’s believed that a postponement to the 1 June ‘back to school’ date is now likely.

Back to school or not?

Children haven’t been in school since the middle of March, and we will soon enter the third month of the education sector’s shutdown. With transmission rates still high in a number of our cities, we might also see some locations held back from reopening the school gates for the next couple of weeks. All will be revealed by Angie Motshekga later this evening
