Level 4 lockdown: Here’s how to check the limits of your 5km exercise radius
Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced earlier this week that level 4 lockdown will be implemented today, 1 May. Exercising is now allowed within a 5km radius from your home.
Exercise restrictions under level 4 lockdown
After sharing news which was undoubtedly music to runners, joggers and cyclists’ ears, the minister explained that we’re only allowed out between 6:00 and 9:00.
In addition to not being able to run or cycle in groups, those looking to exercise will need to wear a cloth mask while out and about. Dhlamini-Zuma explains:
“You can cycle, run and walk. But it’s within your neighbourhood, within a 5km of your home. You aren’t allowed to do this in organised groups. This can only take place between 6:00 – 9:00.”
Furthermore, we need to practice social distancing as well. And did we say no gathering in groups? Capetonians who swarmed the Promenade this morning clearly didn’t get that memo, but we digress.
Another condition was that we’re only allowed to run, jog, walk or cycle within a 5km radius of our homes. Math is not everyone’s strong point, and thus the joggers among us took to social media to discuss the limits of this radius.
Running/Jogging within 5 km radius between 6 am and 9 am is allowed in your neighborhood.

To those complaining about 5km RADIUS 👇🏽🙄 and yeah given option to choose I'd not do a double lap but we're here now, either work with what you have or keep searching for reasons why it can't be done! https://t.co/TOHXvZp1G9

Useful online tool
If doing math on the go is not your thing, you’d want to head over to www.2kmfromhome.com. The site has now been adjusted for South Africa’s 5km-radius restrictions.
The tool allows you to drop a pin on your location (in this case, your home address, because where else would you be, Karen?) and shows the precise measurement of 5km around your home.
You’d also be able to zoom in to see exactly which streets border the 5km radius, enabling you to plan out your route knowing that you won’t make it onto Cyril’s naughty list.
Here’s how to use ‘2km From Home’
Let’s say for the sake of argument that you live on Orchard Street, Northcliff. Select your address and the site will show you the 5km radius around your location.
You’d also be able to zoom in, and plot out your course to ensure you stay safely within the five-kilometre radius. Take a look:
You can also select a range of 1km or 2km, if a shorter job is more up your alley.
