Level 3 lockdown: Nine things you’re still banned from doing

The lockdown restrictions will be eased next week, but this is by no means an invitation to spark a free-for-all. Level 3 does allow for a relaxed version of lockdown to take place, but citizens of South Africa have been asked to play their part in limiting the spread of the coronavirus.

Close contact still not allowed

Public gatherings and close contact within groups is strictly forbidden at Level 3. A number of businesses will also be prohibited from opening their doors at the next stage, too. President Ramaphosa says he trusts the public to act responsibly, but we’ve all got to play by the rules.

What you are still banned from doing during Level 3 of lockdown

Inter-provincial travel

Only in Level 2 will people be allowed to cross freely between provincial borders. But, there is one small exception. Those travelling by plane for business can go to a different province during Level 3.

Leave the country, unless under extraordinary circumstances

Home Affairs say that people can leave South Africa if they match these exceptional criteria. For an overwhelming majority of us, that will not apply. No-one can leave SA for leisurely pursuits.

Socialise in groups

Yes, Level 3 lockdown allows us more freedom. No, this doesn’t mean we can get the gang together for a knees-up. People are still advised to refrain from social activity. Keep it on FaceTime.

Host any form of formal or informal gatherings

Don’t try and get smart by “inviting” your friends to a conference or business event. They’re also prohibited at Level 3.

Drink in a bar or tavern

Although alcohol will return to supermarket shelves next week, this does not mean that our pubs and bars will open their doors too. In fact, none of us will set foot in a watering hole for months to come… (*sobs*)

Attend an entertainment venue

We’re nowhere near anything like the life we knew before coronavirus. Like bars, cinemas and theatres are closed indefinitely.

Go to the gym

Exercise is now permitted at all times during the day, but this must be done outdoors and in a sensible fashion. Gyms and recreational centres won’t open during Level 3 of lockdown.

Stay in a hotel for leisure

You may have heard that some parts of the accommodation industry will be opening their doors. They will only allow people travelling for business to stay with them, though.

Legally buy cigarettes

We didn’t even need NDZ on this one. Ramaphosa says the cigarette ban is here to stay for Level 3.
