Kaizer Chiefs: Kambole opens up about coping during lockdown

Kaizer Chiefs striker Lazarous Kambole has opened up about difficulties faced during the lockdown period.

The Zambian international has had his first season in South Africa cut short after matches were suspended indefinitely in March.

Kambole itching to get back on the field

This came as he was looking to reclaim his spot in the starting XI, having managed just 11 league appearances all season.

Kambole says the first days of the lockdown were a bit of a shock.

“I don’t think anyone can claim to be happy in this period,” he told the Kaizer Chiefs website.

“What I can say is that I am working hard to be strong. It was a shock and difficult at the beginning to be in lockdown, but now I’m trying to cope. It remains difficult but with the kind of support that we receive from the Club, I am confident that together we will survive this difficult time. Remember football is our career, now we can’t play matches which is causing us anxiety.”

All part of the job

The lockdown has also come with the closure of South African borders and, unlike some players, Kambole was unable to catch one of the last flights out of the country.

This has seen him spend the period away from family.

The 26-year-old understand that this is part of the job.

“We are professionals and being away from home is part of our job,” says Kambole. “But this is different because things are abnormal. I wish I was home to battle this situation with my family. At the same time, I’m grateful to still have a job and being able to provide for my family. Thanks to the Club.”

Kambole is yet to find the net in Kaizer Chiefs colours after 12 matches across competitions.

His last competitive appearance was a 21-minute run in the 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows in January.
