Rietvale man arrested for rape, murdering his mother
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Mohale Ramatseba, the motive behind the 36-year-old’s rash actions has yet to be established and thus far, the investigation has been helped by eyewitness testimony and the coroner’s postmortem report.
It is believed that the suspect and his mother were enjoying a fine evening, drinking wine under a tree on Sunday 2 February. Eyewitnesses from Rietvale who saw the suspect with his mother did not find anything untoward about two people enjoying a pleasant evening outside.
However, at some point in their interactions, tragedy struck.
Ramatseba, in a statement, noted that the Rietvale community was woken by the screams of an eyewitness who caught the 36-year-old allegedly raping his mother.
“It is alleged the suspect raped her mother and was caught in the act by a passer-by who raised the alarm. Police were alerted and unfortunately, the victim was found dead,” the police spokesperson wrote.
It did not take Rietvale police long before they caught the suspect. He was placed under arrest and charged with the rape and murder of his mother.
According to the postmortem report, the mother’s cause of death was strangulation. A rape kit was conducted and it was confirmed that indeed, she was sexually assaulted.
The suspect, whose identity is not known at this stage, is expected to appear before the Modderriver Magistrates Court on Wednesday to enter a plea for the charges of rape and murder.
We will have more on this story when more details become available.
