Kaizer Chiefs end speculation by triggering Cardoso extension

Kaizer Chiefs have announced the extension of the contract of defender Daniel Cardoso ending a month of speculation regarding his future.

Cardoso has been impressive at the back for Kaizer Chiefs this season and has played every minute of their Premiership campaign contributing to their march to the top of the table.

Cardoso is staying at Kaizer Chiefs

“The Club exercised the option of extending Daniel Cardoso’s contract with a further year,” an announcement from the club read.

The defender had been linked with a move to fellow Soweto giants Orlando Pirates, but Chiefs exercised their option to trigger a one-year extension on the defender’s contract which had been set to expire at the end of the season.

Kaizer Chiefs confirmed the decision while announcing that the club had concluded their January transfer business.

Cardoso was among a handful of Chiefs regulars who committed their immediate future to the club joining Bernard Parker, Willard Katsande and Daniel Akpeyi in signing extensions.

A satisfactory window for the league leaders

“We are addressing other contracts,” confirmed Bobby Motaung on the Kaizer Chiefs website. “As we did in the past week, we will give an update when the time is right. We just urge and assure our supporters to be patient and focus on the remaining competitions of the season.”

“We had a few players being released and we brought in Anthony Akumu Agay. We are happy with the business that we conducted, and we feel that the players we released will benefit as they will gain valuable playing time at their new clubs,” Motaung said.

“In addition, the club signed contract extensions with Bernard Parker, Willard Katsande and Daniel Akpeyi, Parker and Katsande will remain at the club until the end of the 2020-21 season, while Akpeyi’s new two year deal with the club will see him remain a Chiefs player until the conclusion of the 2021-22 season.”

Kabelo Mahlasela and Sizwe Twala who joined Polokwane City and Swallows FC are among the players let go by Kaizer Chiefs during the January window, while Ghanain James Kotei also left having failed to make an impact in his short time at Naturena.

Kaizer Chiefs’ next league assignment is the visit of Maritzburg United slated to take place at the FNB Stadium on 15 February 2020 but before then Amakhosi kick off their Nedbank Cup campaign against Royal Eagles on 8 February at the same venue.
