Voelklip: Fears mount as car plunges off cliff where Heidi Scheepers died

The tragic spot where Heidi Scheepers and her two young children plunged from a cliff may have claimed more victims on Wednesday. It has been confirmed that a rescue operation is underway in Voelklip – a quiet coastal resort on the Garden Route, near George.

Voelklip latest – car plunges off of cliff

It was reported by the George Herald that a red Chevrolet Spark fell into the sea overnight. Police Spokesman Sergeant Chris Spies confirmed that several organisations had joined the search party, but no bodies have been recovered at this early stage.

“Police were at the scene and rescue workers of the Metro through the night and the NSRI was already on the scene in Voelklip at 5:00 this morning.”

“No body or bodies have been removed yet and sea conditions are not favorable to them at this time. Once they are, the police divers will try to go into the water to investigate where there is movement.”

Echoes of Heidi Scheepers

In October, the tragic death of Heidi Scheepers and her family made national headlines. The mother-of-two went missing with her children during the evening, and mystery surrounds the exact circumstances of her death. Son Hugo and daugher Cozette (whose body was never recovered) are both believed to have died by drowning.

The spot in Voelklip where Heidi Scheepers and her children went missing has been the site of tragedy before. Three youngsters also plunged to their deaths in this location back in 2015. The bodies of the students were found in the November, almost four years to the month before this case.

Marnic Els, Luandro Jansen and Werner Finger – aged 20-21 – were all found days after they had initially disappeared. Police, diving crews and emergency services continue to scour Voelklip on Wednesday.
