Langeveldt quits as Bangladesh bowling coach to rejoin Proteas staff
Former Proteas seamer Charl Langeveldt has left his bowling coach position with Bangladesh after receiving an offer to work with South Africa again.
Langeveldt had been the Proteas bowling coach up until the appointment of Ottis Gibson as head coach in 2017. He joined former Proteas head coach Russell Domingo at the Tigers in July of 2019 but has asked to be released from his contract, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board have obliged.
Langeveldt released by the Bangladesh Cricket Board
BCB cricket operations committee chairman Akram Khan told Bangladeshi newspaper Prothom Alo: “Langeveldt said he has an offer to work in South Africa’s senior side, which is why he requested the Bangladesh Cricket Board to let him go. We have decided to release him.”
The 44-year-old will return to South Africa to finalize the deal and begin work with the squad which assembles for a training camp this week.
A second stint with the Proteas technical team
Langeveldt held the bowling coach position from 2015, taking over from Allan Donald after the Cricket World Cup and serving in the role until the appointment of Gibson in 2017.
After Gibson’s contract was not renewed following a dismal display by the Proteas at the 2019 World Cup, Vincent Barnes stepped in as interim bowling coach for the tour of India. Barnes has since returned to his role within Cricket South Africa’s high-performance programme.
As a player, Langeveldt represented the Proteas in all three international formats. The former Correctional Services warder made his international debut in an ODI against Kenya in 2001. His time among the game’s elite last over nine years, and he played his final match for the Proteas against Pakistan on 31 October 2010. He played six Tests, 72 ODIs and nine T20Is for his country. He amassed a total of 104 first-class appearances in a career that included stints with English counties Somerset, Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Kent.
Langeveldt joins Proteas with CSA in crisis
Langeveldt joins a technical team assembled by the acting director of cricket Graeme Smith and headed up by team director Mark Boucher. Jacques Kallis is expected to be appointed as a batting consultant. Fielding coach Justin Ontong is the only member of Ottis Gibson’s coaching team to remain in place.
The coaching team will have little time to work with players before the series against England gets underway on 26 December with the Boxing Day Test at Supersport Park.
