EFF NPA 2019: Four delegates hospitalised as violence erupts [video]

Scuffles and physical confrontations have ended terribly for a number of delegates at the EFF’s National People’s Assembly. The gathering in Nasrec, Johannesburg descended into violence late on Saturday night, and the use of pepper spray only made things worse.

Who is The General? EFF’s para-military leader fired

We understand that a woman has suffered a seizure after being incapacitated by the spray. The responsibility has been placed directly at the feet of a shady figure called “The General”. He’s the leader of the EFF’s para-military wing – a bit like the ANC’s MK unit – and it believed to have injured the attendees himself. The Defenders of the Revolution chief has since been booted from the party.

The EFF top six – who’s in, who’s out?

The madness broke out just moments after the EFF confirmed their top six had been chosen. Four of the highest-serving members were kicked from their positions, as some fresh faces – and more familiar ones – were drafted in to serve in the party’s executive roles.

  • Commander in Chief: Julius Malema (re-elected).
  • Deputy President: Floyd Shivambu (re-elected).
  • National Chairperson: Veronica Mente (replacing Adv. Dali Mpofu).
  • Secretary-General: Marshall Dlamini (replacing Godrich Gardee).
  • Deputy Secretary-General: : Poppy Raesibe Mailola (replacing Hlengiwe Mkhaliphi).
  • Treasurer General: Umpile Maotwe (replacing Leigh-Ann Mathys).

What to expect from the EFF NPA 2019 on Sunday:

Godrich Gardee is arguably the biggest casualty of the night. The former Secretary-General of the EFF has relinquished his position to Marshall Dlamini – who you may remember for starting a massive brawl outside of Parliament this year. He’s now in charge of the party’s security matters – and this is one hell of an introduction to his new duties.

On Sunday, delegates will elect 35 additional members of the central command team, which is roughly the EFF equivalent to the ANC’s National Executive Committee or the DA’s federal council.
