Christmas crackdown: Cape cops raid drug dens, make multiple arrests

 Four suspected drug dealers were arrested by crime prevention unit members manning hotspots in the Manenberg area of the Western Cape early Sunday afternoon, police have said.

“SAPS members received information of drugs being sold in Thames Avenue, Manenberg. They followed up on the information and found the four suspects at the mentioned address. 

“Upon searching the premises, members discovered and confiscated 229 units of Unga, 252 units of tik, 12.7 grams of tik and 14 large packets of tik. The value of these items is undisclosed.”

Four suspects arrested for dealing in drugs

The four suspects, aged between 19 and 35, were arrested for possession of and dealing in drugs. They are expected to appear at Athlone Magistrate’s Court soon.

In another unrelated incident, on Saturday members of Bishop Lavis SAPS were patrolling in the vicinity of a funeral when they noticed a vehicle, which according to their intelligence, did not belong to the people attending the funeral. 

“When they attempted to approach the vehicle, the driver sped off with members in close pursuit. A male suspect then jumped out of the vehicle, turned around and pointed a firearm at the members, disobeying instructions to surrender.”

SAPS members fired warning shots at the suspect, who was then arrested. A .38 special and rounds of live ammunition were confiscated. 

The suspect, a 22-year-old male, will appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court on charges related to the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition  and pointing a firearm. 

Meanwhile, the hard work of members attached to the Khayelitsha SAPS resulted in confiscation of illegal drugs, ammunition and firearms and the arrests of those who involved in the crimes during the past weekend.

On Sunday evening, members conducting patrols and stop and searches in Site B approached and searched a suspicious male and found one 9mm round of ammunition and a bag of tik. 

“The suspect was arrested for possession of ammunition and tik. The items found in his possession were confiscated and handed in at Khayelitsha SAPS as evidence. Once charged, her will appear at Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court,” the police said. 

Between Friday and Sunday, the Khayelitsha Crime Prevention Unit closed the shebeens that were operating illegally in the area and arrested six suspects on charges related to dealing in liquor.

A total of 390,160 litres of liquor was confiscated the police said. The suspects will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on mentioned charge.
