Watch: Mahikeng CBD Shopping district caught in raging fire [video]

Firefighters have been deployed into Mahikeng CBD, in the North West, where a block of retail stores, at a popular shopping district, caught on fire.

Social media was abuzz, on Monday morning, after images showing a block of retail stores in Mahikeng CBD were posted online by Kagiso Monyadiwa, the spokesperson of the African Transformation Movement (ATM).

Mahikeng CBD: What caused the fire?

At the time of publishing this article, firefighters and emergency rescue workers were still on the scene of the fire, in Mahikeng CBD.

Therefore, there has been no official word on the ground about casualties or injuries suffered by workers from the stores that have been affected.

Local law enforcement authorities were also called onto the scene to cordon off the area. Once the fire has been doused, the police will have the opportunity to inspect the cause of the fire that — at this time — is not known.

Which stores were affected by the fire?

According to Monyadiwa, the raging fire has swallowed up most of what is left of Boxer Superstore, a food market often found in low income communities.

Although it has yet to be confirmed, Sportscene, a streetwear apparel store, may also have been affected by the fire. Monyadiwa has been very critical of how shortstaffed the Mahikeng fire and rescue services is.

He revealed that there were only three firefighters deployed to contain a fire that has been raging, and growing in aggression, since the morning.

No word has been received from the Mahikeng Local Municipality, as yet.
