Tshwane latest: EFF also accused of “office sex” scandal

The addage “people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones” has never been more applicable than it is here. The EFF have hounded Tshwane’s Mayor Stevens Mokgalapa after an audio recording allegedly caught him having sex with a colleague in his office, shortly after ‘gossiping’ about some of his co-workers.

Earlier in the week, Deputy Leader Floyd Shivambu made reference to John Steenhuisen’s highly-publicised affair while serving in KZN. He said that Mokgalapa “learned from the DA’s acting leader” – Steenhuisen confirmed he had an extra-marital relationship back in 2010.

Sex and the City: Tshwane scandal throws up wild accusations

Despite claiming that inter-office relations are “a DA thing”, it seems like Shivambu might have turned a blind eye to what happens in his own party. Journalist and radio host Oliver Dickson has thrown a wild accusation towards the Red Berets, who he believes have been acting as more than just “good comrades” at their base in Braamfontein:

EFF, ANC hammer the DA for Mokgalapa fiasco

The scandal-within-a-scandal doesn’t seem to have disturbed the EFF or their leadership. Shivambu has stayed mute on the matter. The third-biggest political party in South Africa are often questioned about their sexual exploits, and their reputation was called into question earlier this year.

Julius Malema’s liberal sex advice at Durban July went viral, and the discovery of used condoms at an EFF function in a Cape Town-rented property set tongues wagging. However, this isn’t really in the same ball-park as the other allegations. And as for the ANC’s take on the Mokgalapa saga? Well, they’ve also been shot down.

Nomboniso Gasa is a Professor of Public Law at UCT – she made reference to a press briefing the party held earlier this week, where they slammed DA members for having “sex in public places”. The slapdown was brutal:

Really ANC? You want to comment on sex in the office? Are you sure you want to go there?

The likes of Collins Chabane, Pule Mabe and even Cyril Ramaphosa have been implicated in sex scandals within the past two years. As the Professor suggests, no-one really gets to take the moral highground here.
