Saxonwold: Guptas multi-million rand property up for auction [photos]
One of the five properties in Saxonwold, Johannesburg owned by the Guptas is up for auction on Monday. The sprawling complex homed the billionaires during the height of their state capture activities, but since the house of cards tumbled and their dodgy deals were exposed, their properties have found themselves under the hammer.
The Indian businessmen are under extreme legal pressure to return to South Africa, as the State Capture Inquiry approaches its 16th month of interviews. On Monday, anti-corruption lobbyist Peter Hain attended the Commission, dishing more dirt on the Guptas and the international companies who helped them loot the state.
Where are the Guptas?
As far as we understand, the Gupta brothers are based in Dubai. The UAE is yet to ratify an international treaty with South Africa which could lead to their prosecution overseas. Meanwhile, US authorities have blacklisted Jacob Zuma’s handlers from conducting any financial activity in the States whatsoever.
Life has come full circle for the brothers, and this won’t be their only property in Mzansi that gets put up for auction. Dwellings at Umhlanga Rocks in Durban and Bishops Court in Cape Town will receive the same treatment, as will one of their commercial buildings in Midrand.

Buying a property in Saxonwold
Those bidding for the infamous Saxonwold home (not the entire complex, just one of the properties on its own) will be asked to fork out something like R2.5 – R3.2 million. Park Village Auctions are in charge of the bidding process, and they have listed the following amenities:
- Family home comprised of entrance foyer, lounge, dining room, TV room, kitchen, three bedrooms and two bathrooms (one en-suite).
- Covered patio with access to garden area and swimming pool located at the front of the dwelling.
- Outbuildings comprised of double garage, staff bedroom and bathroom.
- Portion 2 of Erf 28 : Measuring 1 199 Square metres. Approximate Extent of Improvements: 342 square metres.
