Avoid JSE: Sandton warned of march taking place on Monday, 18 November

Workers and motorists in Sandton, Johannesburg, have been warned of a march that is scheduled to take place in most of the streets on Monday, 18 November.

JSE protests: What is the nature of the march?

While there has been no official confirmation of the protest from the City of Joburg, it seems very likely that thousands of protesters will take over the city’s business mecca on Monday afternoon.

Moreover, organisers of the protest action have not yet issued a statement on the matter. However, Sandton Central, a commercial centre and home to three business improvement districts, has issued a poster with more information on the march.

It is believed that the protest action will kick off in Alexandra, about 6.7km away, at 13:30 and will make its way into Sandton. The march will make its way into the business mecca where around 2 500 – 3 000 protesters will meet on Maude Street, outside the JSE building.

Furthermore, the protesters are expected to deliver a memorandum to the JSE management which details a list of demands regarding economic empowerment and “requesting business in Sandton to support businesses in Alexandra.”

Sandton: These roads will be affected on Monday, 18 November

Based on the sheer size of the protests, law enforcement officers will more than likely be on guard, looking out for any possible disruptions to proceedings.

According to Sandton Central, the march, coming from Alexandra Mall, will make its way to Maude Street, affecting the following roads:

  • Rautenbach Avenue;
  • Grayston Drive;
  • Katherine Street;
  • West Street; and
  • Maude Street
