Just in: ANC MP Bongani Bongo arrested on fraud charges

Hawks have confirmed that an ANC MP based in Cape Town has been arrested for acts of corruption. It’s strongly believed that the person in question is Bongani Bongo, a former cabinet minister during the Jacob Zuma-era of government. The accused is set to appear in court later on Thursday.

Who is Bongani Bongo?

The former chief of State Security was given a re-introduction to politicis back in June, when the ANC Secretary General handed the controversial figure a position as a Parliamentary Chair. Bongo was relieved of his duties in February 2018, when Cyril Ramaphosa replaced Zuma as president.

Although it hasn’t yet been established why Bonngo has been hauled-in for questioning, it’s likely related to allegations that he tried to bribe one of the evidence leaders at last year’s Eskom Inquiry. The MP was implicated heavily in the Gupta-led scandal, and allegedly tried to keep a lid on things.

State capture arrest confirmed

The arrest marks a significant chapter in modern South African history, as Bongani Bongo becomes the first serving Member of Parliament to face a criminal charge on matters related to state capture. He was also blasted at the Zondo Commission earlier this year, and the net seems to have comprehensively closed on him.
