ARREST MADE AFTER JOE SLOVO TAXI RANK MURDERS
A South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, said detectives from the Provincial Taxi Violence Unit arrested the suspect from Nyanga on Monday and found a firearm in his possession.
Three people, aged between 27 and 40, were killed at the scene at Joe Slovo rank on Wednesday, 22 September. A fourth victim was transported to a hospital where they later succumbed to their serious gunshot wounds.
Potelwa initially said the taxi unit linked the shooting incident to taxi industry-related conflict. After the arrest was made, the police maintain that the killings were related to the industry.
The 41-year-old is expected to face charges of murder and attempted murder before the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 28 September.
In an unrelated incident, Cape Town police launched a manhunt after three women were shot and killed by unknown suspects in Khayelitsha on Monday night. “Reports from the scene indicate that residents at the TT Block informal settlement recall hearing gunshots after 20:00,” said Potelwa.
The victims in that incident were aged 17, 20 and 21. The motive for their murder is yet to be determined by the police.
