Mayor Matongo was killed in accident in Lenasia on his way home

The City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Councillor Jolidee Matongo was on his way home from Soweto when he was killed in an accident in Lenasia on Saturday.

Mayoral spokesperson Phindile Chauke, Matongo was returning from work in Soweto to encourage voters to register to vote in the upcoming Local Government Elections 2021 alongside President Cyril Ramaphosa and Gauteng David Makura.

“Mayor Matongo was travelling with two of his VIP protectors at the time of the accident. Both protectors sustained injuries.”

Chauke said more details about the Mayor’s passing will be shared in due time.

Meanwhile, the Gauteng provincial government said it mourns the untimely passing on of Matongo.

“The Gauteng Provincial Government is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the untimely passing on of City of Johannes Mayor Councilour Jolidee Matongo.

“He was a committed and selfless activist who dedicated his time to serving the people. He served as councillour for many years before being elected as the Mayor of Joburg.”

Makura said during Matongo’s short tenure as the Mayor of Johannesburg dedicated his time to the overall improvement of the quality of life of the people of Johannesburg.

“M.ayor Matongo executed his duties with a cool and calm demeanor and remained committed to selflessly serving the citizens of Johannesburg, Premier David Makura said.
