Former Maritzburg United goalkeeper secures European move!

Former Maritzburg United goalkeeper Jethren Barr has officially secured a move to European outfit Portadown FC on a two-year deal.

Barr joins Portadown on a free transfer following his release from the Team of Choice at the end of last season.

Barr will be replacing Manchester United loanee Jacob Carney who has since moved to Sunderland from Portadown.

Speaking of his move to Portadown, Barr admitted he was excited to finally get to play in Europe after he was denied this opportunity by Maritzburg United two years ago.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper further revealed that he had offers from a number of PSL clubs but his mind was already made up about moving to Europe.

“Obviously, I always wanted to play in Europe. It’s been a dream of mine,” said Barr.

“I did have an opportunity to go to Denmark two years ago but Maritzburg United had plans for me.

“So, the move didn’t materialize but now that I’m a free agent and this opportunity came up, I decided to snatch it with both hands,” he explained.

“I didn’t even consider staying in South Africa or any of the teams that had contacted me in the PSL,” added Barr.

“So, it was a very easy decision to make when these guys came knocking,” concluded Barr.
